How can I get polylines with width to join at the corners without the gap shown in the attached file?

Use line weights instead of widths.

Another couple of suggestions....

Create the straight line as a pline and assign a width.
Create the arc as a "regular" line.
Join them using the fillet command, choosing the striaght line first. This technique will NOT work very well for lines at acute angles.

The second suggestion is downright awkward. Break the lines at the intersection. Stretch the straight line to the left half the specified PL width. (See, I warned you it was awkward!).

I tried your first suggestion and got the same result where the corner of the arc and line do not come to a sharp, crisp corner.

Suggestion two about stretching one line to align with the width of the other would work, but I need the two segments to be one polyline.

So I'm still stuck, but thanks for the effort.

Is this not a problem for anyone else? I didn't think connecting an arc and polyline was such a rare occurrence. Actually, I can't believe it's even a problem.

Yes it was a problem in r14 and before. That's why when they came out with
line weights in 2000, everyone went to that where end styles can be
controlled in the ctb file.

The reason why lineweights won't work in this case is that the polyline needs to have a thickness (not to be confused with width) and will be used in a 3D model. We're trying to avoid using soilds for as many small, thin shapes we would need to have.

Have you looked into 2007? There's a CONVTOSOLID that coverts a pline with a
width and height to a solid and it still acts like a pline in most cases.
There's also POLYSOLID. Here's a short clip

Yes, we're in the process of converting over to 2007right now. I was just asking what I thought was an very basic, easy question that I foolishly thought would return to me a easy solution that I needed to have right away. I guess the bottom line and what I will need to tell all the users in the office, is this type of simple polyline is not possible in 2005.
Very surprising.

Thanks for all the input anyway.

Hi,
Please check that the line type you have drawn your object with is "continuous"
It should be solved.

If you can draw it with even a *very short* line segment coming around the corner from the other line segment, and have the arc segment be a tangent continuation of that short line segment, it will fill in the corner, because it can do that in line-segment corners, whatever the angle.
