I have created a two 2D drawings in AutoCAD 2006 a week ago. I am unable to open the drawings. I have tried recover but could not open the drawing. The drawing is visible in the preview plane. Can anyone suggest how to recover my drawing.

what happens when you try to open the drawings? any error messages? does it just sit there? how are you trying to open the drawings?

preview image is just that, an image last taken when the
file was saved. It is NOT a live image of what is inside
your file, it's a "history" nothing more.

Try INSERT command as well as other suggestions.

Was one of the last things you did on that drawing hatching?? Try to do a
partial open without the hatch layer. I have seen this when associative
hatching was used with xref boundaries. Only a thought, also as Dean
suggested, insert into an other drawing, or xref into another drawing and
then bind (with insert option). If all else fails try your .bak, rename the
.bak and to a .dwg and see if that will open, if it does open you may have
lost some info but you should have most of the drawing.
