Associative dimension problems!

I have associative dimensions created in paperspace. When I edit the underlying XREF and go back to these dimensions, they have gone all out of whack. DIMLFAC is set to 1, DIMASSOC is set to 2.

At the same time, when I try to add new dimensions to this same paperspace, they do not show the correct dimension, BUT, if I manually reassociate any of the existing and/or screwed up associative dimensions, they do continue to show the correct dimensions. All of these dimensions are the same dimstyle. I have to delete all of these dimensions and start all over again.

I am so confused! I've looked through the topics and tried to fix this without success. Help!

As far as I know, dimensions created in paper space don't retain
associativity to objects in model space. I believe your dimensions need to
be created in the same space as the objects you are dimensioning. If I am
wrong, it would be wonderful, however, so far, I have not been living in a
perfect world.

Did you see that Mickowitz sets DIMASSOC to 2 but he still has the problem?

If DIMASSOC = 2, paper space dimensions DO retain associativity with model
space items. If you stretch an object in model space, the dimensions
automatically update in the layout.

If the model space objects are xrefs, the dimensions have to be reassociated
on the layout.

As of 2002, not all objects worked correctly with DIMASSOC set to 2. It
looks like at least some of this has been carried over to 2006.

I've noticed the same thing on my projects and I don't use any XREF. My dimassoc is set to 2 but at times dimensions wont association and I need to use the reassociate command. Once reassociated they stick. It happens enough that I added a reassocatiate button to my dimensioning toolbar.
