x-ref bind: *Invalid*

When I try to bind an xref, I get *INVALID* and it won't bind. I'm using AutoCAD 2000i. What is this error, and how can I bind these x-refs ??

you might have a nested xref (xref in an xref) if this is the case you will
need to detach the nested xref(s) and then reattach them to your main dwg, then
you should be able to bind them.

Nope, not nested x-refs.

I did the 'wblock' solution. When I wblock inside the xref, I get this error:

The drawing doesn't contain 'proxy' objects.

You might try a recover on all the xref
files.

I've run into this and my final solution was to dxfout only the entities of
the xref drawings and recreate them from the dxfs. A real slow pain, but I
finally got it to work.

Some files just seem to get corrupted in very strange ways. Just had a
drawing which had entities colored bylayer but appeared white, even after
an audit, until I dxf'ed the entities out and recreated the drawing from
the dxf file. The appropriate colors returned.

Who knows???

Do you have any blocks within any files that are the same name as the
file itself?

Were all the files opened and saved as R2000, R2000i or R2002?

Have you run AUDIT and/or RECOVER on all these files?

Here's another thing to check:

Did you change an x-ref'ed layer's color or
linetype after originally inserting them.

If you do that, you can not later bind
them.

Set "visretain" to 0, save the drawing, exit the
drawing, reopen the drawing and all original colors and linetypes should come
back.  Then try binding.

And here is another one:

If you have renamed the xref, in the xref
dialog box. (yes you can do that) and have used special characters, such as / or
$ or ^ or . or { or # or anything, this can cause xref's to fail on a
bind.

Heres another thought....

    We've had problems when trying
to bind drawings with long layer names and long drawing names as it appends the
xref filename onto the layer name in the new drawing.

If it's too long you get an *invalid* error.
one possible fix for this is when given the option to BIND or INSERT choose
INSERT!... this does not append the xref drawing name to the layer name. The
other option is to go into all your drawings and rename the layers to shorter
layer names (pain)

The other possible causes have already been
mentioned:
Corrupt xref or nested xref (run
audit or recover drawings) etc.

I have had this problem with files that were previously saved as R14 drawings as the xref. I open the xref in 2000 and "SaveAs" with "AutoCAD 2000 Drawing (*.dwg)" selected in the bottom drop-down of the "SaveAs" dialog box. I then switch back to the drawing that is referencing the xref, reload, and then try to bind it again. It usually works for me.

sometimes it works if you go through the recovery process
with all the files that are xrefed and save them when all
the errors have been corrected. then you should be able
to open the original drawing and bind the xrefs with no
problem. also make sure the xrefs are not "read only".

To recover a drawing...instead of simply opening the drawing,
you would click File|Drawing Utilities|Recover and then browse
to the location of the xref files.

I had the same problem if I used several xrefs with similiar filenames with more than 8 letters. E.g. "topograf1.dwg" and "topograf2.dwg". If you bind them, ACAD tries to shorten the names to "topogra" for the layer list. Two xrefs with the same name are impossible! So just rename the xrefs and it should work!
