script files not completing ?

when i run a script file with a command such as -layer and enter a number of parameters i always seem to have the script stop with Acad waiting for user input .. the problem may or may not be how the enter key is interpreted

for example

if i run a script

-layer
set
layerlayer

... the script will always stop asking for the next layer command

it may be the embedded returns on the text line are not picked up but its driving me nuts .. any clues??
