"Failed to update the system registry" error when starting ACAD 2000i

Hi,

One of our customers has a Win2000 computer running AutoCAD 2000i,
and he is connected to a Win2000 server.

Upon starting AutoCAD, I get the error
"Failed to update the system registry. Please try using REGEDIT."

I have checked two documents on the Knowledge Base regarding this issue:

"Registry error when running the software on Windows 2000 Network"
Document ID: TS53457

and

"Running AutoCAD software as a Domain User on Microsoft Windows 2000"
Document ID: TS55765

I have done as these two documents suggests; giving sufficient rights to the
"MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk" registry key and giving rights to the program
folder, all as described in TS55765. (And yes, I have typed the correct
program folder name for this particular version.)

None of the suggestions works, except from that of giving the user
Domain Admin rights. Then AutoCAD 2000i works correctly.

The problem is, I don't want to give the users Domain rights! These are
hired employees, and they should not have more access rights than absolutely
necessary.

Does anyone know if there is a way to make AutoCAD 2000i work on Win2000 in
a Win2000
network, without making the users Domain Admins? Are there any patches
around for
this issue?

I might add that according to good programming standards, an application
should not
need full write-access to the registry and the Program Files folder. That is
why, say,
the mail client Eudora no longer insists of storing user data under the
Program Files
folder, and so should it also have been with AutoCAD 2000i.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Users in Windows 2000 must have "Power User" privaleges on the computer that
is running AutoCAD. This name has the same meaning that the group "Users"
had in NT 4 because of a change in Microsoft terminoloy. If you put all
users in the "Users" group in win2k, they will have problems with more than
just autocad.
