Preserving Position of Existing Block attributes

This situation has come up before in these discussion groups but I wasn't sure if a solution was provided: We have a drawing with several hundred instances of the same attributed block. For each block, the attribute position was moved to accommodate drawing composition (preventing overlapping, etc.). We now need to change the layer of the attribute for the block and pass this change to all existing instances. Every method we've tried (-attedit, attredef, refedit) successfully changes the attribute layer, but moves the attributes back to their default positions. Is there a way to preserve the position of existing block attributes when redefining other aspects of the attribute? We are using basic AutoCAD 2002 with SP1.

Locating the attribute in the desired location during REFEDIT and ATTSYNC should do the trick
