Make .DWG file Locked or Read Only ?

Hello,
Is it possible to save a .dwg file in a "Read Only" format, ... maybe 'password protected' ? I'm forwarding it to consultants who should not be given 'write-access', but only need to view it.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated,
-Dave Martin

Not really the answer you want but, you can send
the file as a PDF or an eDrawing (I think that is what it is
called)

DWF works great for client presentation, VOLO is with 2002, however, for less faster procedure and shorter browser upload / use WHIP instead, and ePLOT to classic format, guess it will be appropriate.

Basically you only have a
few choices.  One is to get an inexpensive PDF creator.
Then you simply plot to the PDF printer.  You can also, as others
suggested, print to an e-file.  This will create a DWF that can be opened
in Volo View Express (free from Autodesk), or Volo View (about $150 from
Autodesk).

Another choice is to print it as a jpg file, or a
png file.

Another way to protect the file if all someone
needs to do is look at it, and scale is not so important, or size either, for
that matter, you can insert the drawing into a Word document and you can
password protect the Word document.  There would be no accurate scale, and
the drawing would be greatly reduced to fit on an 8-1/2 x 11 paper or even 11 x
17.

The nice thing about using Volo View or Volo View
Express is that both of these allow red marking and allow the layers to be
turned on or off.

Some people send out their drawings in a semi
protected way by exploding everything, assigning one layer for all objects, and
generally making it very difficult to use the original file.  I don't like
those people very much.

If you are sending it out to someone who has no
predictable need to edit the drawing, then one of the above methods (excluding
the last one of exploding everything) works fine.  If the consultant has a
predictable need to edit the drawing then just send him the drawing file.
If he needs it that way, then you send it intact for his use.

Skip WHIP, go with this freebie, and make DWF files any way you
want:

Jack and All,
Thanks for your posts. The solution of saving it to .DWF format seems to provide the end user viewer with the greatest flexibility.

Does anyone know if the file can be 'locked' at the Windows operation system level. That might be the easiest, but I don't know for sure if it can be done.

All suggestions welcome,
-Dave Martin
