Inaccurate Distances - Major problem

Here's a wild one.

We've just gotten our whole office onto AutoCAD 2002, and now people are
reporting problems with Direct Distance Entry.

What happens is: you run a command - say Copy.

Pick an object

Hit the Space bar (that's important) to finish the Selection set.

Pick a point with the left Mouse button.

Move your mouse in the direction you want to copy.

Type in a distance (say 8') and hit the Space bar. to finish the Direct
Distance.

Do a distance between the two objects, and they are 7'-11 7/8" apart.

This seems to ONLY happen when you use the space
bar.  Not the Right mouse or the Enter key.  It also appears to be off
by the distance of your Units tolerance times the number of space bars
typed.  We use Units set to Arch & 1/64 tolerance

At the command line:

UNITS 4 64 1 2 0 N

This is causing MAJOR problems for us - Anyone
have any ideas?

I've just heard from the vendor of one of our 3rd
party apps & he says he's had a few other people report the same
issue.

So, that would explain why nobody can reproduce
it.

Thanks for trying, everybody!  I appreciate
it.

OK, I'm ready to make it public.

The application is ArchT.

Here's their explanation and
work-around.

I'm planning on turning oiff the enhanced MOVE and
COPY commands, although that may have some other side effects.

Direct Distance Entry with ArchT in AutoCAD 2000-2002

There is a problem that has been around for awhile using Direct Distance
Entry with ArchT in AutoCAD 2000-2002. Direct Distance Entry is the method of
COPYing or MOVEing entities by pointing in the direction you want and typing in
a distance on the keyboard. Although many are aware of the problem not everyone
knows how to get around it. Thanks to the help of a user and some research on
our part we have been able to identify the exact conditions under which the
problem develops and how to avoid it.

In order to avoid the problem you first need to know how it is caused. To see
the problem perform the following steps:

In the Utility>Preferences>Session menu on the Commands tab check the
box 'Enable Enhanced Commands'.

Turn ORTHO ON

Select the COPY command

Select the objects you wish to copy

To finish selecting objects press the SPACEBAR (not ENTER or a right mouse
click)

Drag the crosshairs to the right and up so that the selected entities are
dragged at angle 0

Instead of selecting a point type in a distance on the keyboard followed by
the SPACEBAR (example: 8')

Using the DISTANCE command measure the distance between the two objects.

Results: The distance is off by varying amounts

To avoid the problem keep the following tips in mind:

1. With ORTHO OFF it is impossible to cause the problem.

2. Using the ENTER key instead of the SPACEBAR will not cause the
problem.

3. The problem only occurs with the ArchT enhanced versions of the AutoCAD
commands.

4. It is possible to use the SPACEBAR only IF Polar Tracking is turned ON and
the angle of the line displays next to the crosshairs.

5. You can explicitly specify the angle and distance as in 8'<0. With the
IntelliCAD version of ArchT you must use this method.

We expect to fix this problem in the next version of ArchT.

One last comment (I hope)

Got this from ArchT today:

>> The problem with direct distance entry turns out to be an AutoCAD
bug. I am

>> waiting for a response from them to see if there is an
alternative.

So, it looks like it comes full circle, after
all.

I'm trying to protect the guilty here.

I'm talking to the developer to make sure it really
is the problem.

Once I've confirmed it or he's fixed it, I'll post
the name.

I WILL say I ran into an easily reproducible
problem that was very similar in the early days of R2000 - using direct distance
would result in a slight difference compared to what was typed. I was
working for a reseller at the time, and was able to reproduce it over the phone
with an Autodesk tech. I can't remember the exact situation now, so I don't know
if it was ever fixed.

This problem has been fixed in the latest release of ArchT. The bug resulted from ArchT's reliance on AutoCAD correctly reporting the value of the LASTPROMPT system variable, which in this case should contain the distance entered by the user. However when the SPACEBAR is pressed AutoCAD was returning the wrong value.
