Extension & Parallel osnaps

I am probably about to demonstrate my extreme doltness, but here goes.
I cannot seem to get the new Extension and Parallel osnaps to work. For
Parallel, I have a diagonal line on screen. I do another line, and pick a
start point. I then choose parallel osnap, and when I put the cursor over
the first line, I do indeed see the parallel marker. I then pick and get "No
Parallel found for specified point." at the command line. For extension, no
amount of mouseover results in a marker appearing.

Please, embarrass me and tell me what ridiculously simple thing I am doing.

Regards,
Gordon

P.s. I have tried it with various permutations of Polar, Osnap & Otrack on
and off. Ack!

Can't try this right now, but do you have OTRACK on in the status bar?

Gordon,

You are 7/8th of the way there.

Pick the first point as you are doing, bring your cursor to the existing line
AND THEN...

Once you see the marker then pull away and you should notice there is a marker
left on the line and when you cursor gets to a point that would be either an
extension or parallel to that marker you will have temporary extension line or
parallel line and your cursor should have a tool tip pop up with the type of
object tracking and the length

In order to work correctly, you need the following checked,
Tools>Options>Drafting>AutoSnap Settings>Display AutoSnap tooltip

So, with everyone's help I discovered that my problem was that Alignment
Point Aquisition was set to Shift to Aquire, and the book I was reading
didn't mention that the example process requires that the setting be
Automatic. Now, when I tap the shift key, everything works fine. Woo hoo!

Thanks all,
Gordon

Therin lies my problem. When I pull away, after seeing the marker, but not
picking anything, nothing happens. The marker goes away, and it is as if I
had no snap running. I can bring the cursor back to the line and I get the
marker again, and loose it again as I pull away. Any other advice?

Check your "Drafting" settings in "Options".
You probably have "Shift to acquire" set. Set to "Automatic" or hold down
the shift key when sliding the cursor over the parallel line.

Make note of your settings, but...

My AUTOSNAP is set to 55
My OSMODE is set to 12451
My TRACKPATH is set to 0

Re:

Look at my other post below AND ...

I'm assuming under options, drafting, you have marker checked, since you
describe the marker in previous post. Which means you have that set as it
is needed.

Clear your OSNAPs except for parallel, until you get the feel for this.

Assuming you have one line drawn, start the line command again, pick a start
point. To get the second point, move crosshair over to the existing line,
parallel marker should appear then, (read next phrase carefully) when you
pull away there should be a SMALL CROSS left behind (do not pick anything).
Slowly move crosshair to a location that looks parallel and that's when the
dialog box (polar coordinates) will appear.
