ERROR: "locked by AutoCAD Map or an earlier version"

I have a user who is trying to open an old (R14?) drawing, and when trying to open it gets the following AutoCAD Message: "File X:\...\A4-7.dwg is locked by AutoCAD Map or an earlier version of AutoCAD. Access to the file is denied."

I tried inserting the problem drawing into a blank drawing, xreffing, even recover, to no avail.

I searched Knowledge Base and this forum - found nothing.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

If there is an .lk# file, delete it.

Thanks. There was a .dwk file of the same name in the folder(!). Where that came from I do not know...

Yep! That was the old S8 lock file name. I'd forgotten. Anyhow, they get
left around if there was a crash.

It was also used for R12 (maybe R13) and older versions of
AutoCAD. AutoCAD use to use this file to show that a DWG
file was open (locked) by a person. R14 (and maybe R13) got
away from that from using the OS to lock files. I believe
that Map still uses the .dwk file to lock files, but never
using Map, I don't know so I'm pretty much talking out of my
%$@# on that one.

In the old R12 days I had a batch routine run every night
that looked for a delete all .dwk files from certain
directories. I also had to do the same thing for font files
as AutoCAD use to create "lock" files on fonts when it was
opening a DWG. And since all of our fonts where on the
network, if AutoCAD crashed when opening a drawing it would
leave both a .dwk and leave the .shk (I think that was the
extension, maybe .slk). Making it so that nobody could use
that font until that "lock" file was deleted.
