Type ROT at the command prompt before you click on a location in your
drawing to drop it at... .

Dean,

I'm sure you knew this, but for the others in here.

R (vs. ROT) will work prior to insertion (paste, pastespec) as will:

R (rotation angle)
S (scales X,Y,Z)
X (scales X only)
Y (scales Y only)
Z (scales Z only)

PR (Preview Rotate)
PS (Preview X,Y,Z Scale)
PX (Preview X scale)
PY (Preview Y scale)
PZ (Preview Z scale)

I never understood why someone would want to type in more letters to get less
(as all the Preview options simply Previews the inserting object(s) but
reverts back and makes you retype in any non-default values)?

Old habits are hard to get rid of 😉

Besides, having spent so many years typing END, INT, PER and so
on, what it the difference in doing it for ROT or SC in other
commands. Why are the OSNAPs which are used more often not single
letter abbreviations? That is the part I never understood.

Tracy
This is new to me... never heard of it
the options are nice but i will like to know the difference between the
commands (R S X Y Z )
and the preview commands.. although the sound of them is self explanatory,
it seems like the PR option actually do the rotation as the R command i'm
missing a nuance..

Ella,

Try them... pretty easily understood. and also these options are documented in
the AutoCAD Help
Contents Tab > Command Reference Book > Commands > Insert > a link to "prompts
on the command line" >Options

Phew, huh?

Or Help > Index Tab > INSERT command > command line prompts > Options

As for the difference, PR, P-whatever only previews your setting, when you
return to actually inserting the block all the PReviewed settings are gone.
Whereas if you type in S and set the overall scale to 1.5 then you won't be
prompted for X,Y scale, same applies to R for rotation.... so a good menu macro
& insertion automation tip is if you have a block (or block libray) that is
always at a certain scale but needs to be rotated would be:

^c^c-insert;yourblock;s;1 (this way you pick the insertion point and the
rotation angle and done...

The difference is the without the P the previewed options stick when you
-insert... try it you'll like it

Dean,

I thought the same thing about the osnaps. Why have the machine bog down
hunting for a six or seven osnaps while I'm just trying to get to the other
side of a hatch?

I added the following to my accelerators section of my menu and have never
looked back. I'm a right hand on the mouse, left on the keyboad 90% of the
time guy. So shift>any key is about the same as pressing a single key (2=1).
Of course if you are typing and hit shift >e for the capital sometimes it
types end, but if you always use Caps in AutoCAD - no problem.

[SHIFT+"E"]END
[SHIFT+"W"]MID
[SHIFT+"Q"]CEN
[SHIFT+"A"]NON
[SHIFT+"T"]INT
[SHIFT+"R"]per
[SHIFT+"S"]NEA

thanks Tracy

i was aware of the insert options what i totally did not know
(unfortunately) is that i can use this options in PASTING (ctrl+v)
what i meant is that in ctrl+v the PR option act as a rotation option and
not as a preview....

always ALWAYS learning something new 🙂

I'm a right-click pick-em kind of guy, but that is an excellent tip if
anyone here is watching.

thanks guys did not no you could do all that with copy and paste while we
are on the subject, is there a way to select a reference point before you do
a copy so you can copy to the same position in another drawing

Yes... I would recommend using Edit > Copy with Basepoint (COPYBASE) and
then Edit > Paste as block (PASTEBLOCK) prior to insertion while the block
is on te end of your cursor, type in R[enter] and then either type in an
angle or in your case select two points which match the desired angle and
then complete the PASTEBLOCK.

Note: I am not a fan of Copy/Paste or COPYBLOCK/PASTEBLOCK but if you do use
these methods or commands, be aware of your layering and block naming (as in
the above situation I would reccomend renaming the block to something other
than the "A$C2BE5329B" type name AutoCAD assigns to such objects.

Also, if the objects are already blocks I would use DesignCenter to
copy/insert them (the R trick works) or since they are blocks then you can
use the COPYBASE/PASEBLOCK and then EXPLODE that funky named blok back to
it's original name, but still watch your layers/linetypes/text styles,
etc...

Hope this helps.
