convert PDF to DWG or DXF

Is it possible to convert a PDF to DWG or DXF? I need to revise a drawing
that I only have in PDF form right now. The only other option would be to
create the drawing from scratch, which would be very labor intensive...

Mike,

Get Gostview/Ghostscript off the web (freeware). It can convert a pdf to
a dxf.

I downloaded Ghostscript 7.0, but I have no idea how to use to it to convert
a PDF to DXF. It seems like a programmer's tool, which I am not.....

any other software?

Mike,

You need to have both Ghostscript AND Ghostview. Ghostview is the
user-friendly interface with Ghostscript. Use Ghostview when you start.
Confusing way to do it (2 seperate software packages), but it works.

David.... have you been pretty satisfied with the above
combo over the Acrobat package?

Does the combo give you pretty much the same
functionality as full Acrobat?

Hey John,

I've never used anything but the Reader, so I really can't say. I would
have to think, though, that the Adobe stuff is better. The main thing
Ghostview/script does is to convert between several formats, including
eps, tif, dxf, pdf, jpg, bmp, to name a few.

And this is something that Acrobat will NOT do,
correct?

If yes... that gives Ghostview a major advantage right
there, doesn't it?

Don't know, like I said I have only used the Reader. I don't know at all
what a full version of Acrobat will do...

Oh I see.

So .... do you "create" PDF files using Ghostview and
GhostScript then?

IOW.... what I am asking is... what do YOU do with
Ghost view and script?

And why not just buy full Acrobat?

Well, actually, I hardly ever use it. What I do use it for is to convert
eps files (exported from Autocad, plot device Postscript Level 1) to
pdf's for distribution to clients, et al. It does this just fine, but I
have one called 5D2PDF that is easier to use and does the same
(eps-->pdf).

Why not Adobe Acrobat? These are free...

Thanks Dave, I downloaded both and am now able to open a PDF file. BUT, If I
do a saveas, it only gives me PDF as an option. If I do convert, it only
gives me raster extensions ( no dxf). How do I save it as a DXF?

Mike,

Try Edit>Convert to vector format..., select dxf. I just ried it on a
county highway map and it worked pretty good. A bit CPU intensive,
though. Also, I noticed that Ghostview does not automatically add the
file extension (.dxf) so make sure you type it in.

Back to work,

What is this 5D2PDF?

I'm also interested in this, but when I try to create these EPS files (thru plot device) with Aerial Photography in the Model Space, it doesn't work.

Is there a way to create PDF files from AutoCAD 2002?

Thanks.

I've had really good results with the Postscript plot (as opposed to
EPSOUT) device, but I don't plot images that often...

This has been covered here extensively, but I think you're stuck with
eps or jpg, then converted to a pdf.

I finally realized the file extension thing...I would make the dxf, then go
into ACAD to open it...no dxf....finally went into explorer and saw the file
without the extension..thanks!

If you have Adobe Acrobat/Distiller this is simple, you simply plot using
their printer driver.

PDF to DXF/DWG:

PDF -> Adobe Illustrator10 -> DWG/DXF -> AutoCAD
or
PDF -> GhostScript + GSView -> DXF -> AutoCAD
or
PDF -> Adobe Acrobat (full version) -> Copy/Paste -> AutoCAD

Question.... is Ghostview a PDF viewer ONLY?

If yes..... are there any freeware ways to create PDF
files ala Acrobat 4?

John,

See my reply in one of those messages above. GV/GS will open pdf's and
eps files and convert them into jpg, bmp, tif, dxf, eps, pdf, png, etc.
That's the main function of this software as far as I can see.

you used to be able to get 5D PDF creator for free, but it was bought out and now has a
big watermark or something in the printout that can't be removed unless you buy it.

I did notice a free one at Elise Moss's site http://www.mossdesigns.com/tutorials.htm

Don't know anything about it though.
