Autosave

Could someone please explain how the Autosave option works in Autocad 2002? There never seems to be an autosave file when we need it. Thanks, Vincent M. Hunter, AIA

you need to specify minutes between saves (SAVETIME) it is 120 minutes by default. And specify the location of all Autosave files (SAVEFILEPATH). hope it helps.

Thanks, but i was looking for a more specific answer on how and when the AUTOSAVE files are created and when/if Autocad 2002 now actaully deletes them. i have already set the savetime to 2 minutes, but there is no file in the autosave directory i specified when i exit the drawing or the autosave file that is there is more than 2 minutes old. what i really want is the original autosave feature from r.14. That worked great.

Hi!
Go into options in tools menu.
click on "files"
You should see "Automatic save file location"
click on this and choose the directory you want to save your drawings.

good luck!

yes, it is temporary file and if you "x" your drawing without saving changes (click NO when AutoCAD asks you if you want to save changes) this file disappears. but when you don't have an option to save changes or not, software keeps last temporary file (at least it suppose to) and you can open it if you change extension from .sv$ to .dwg.
sorry, i don't know how it worked in r.14. natasha

Do a search in these groups for Autosave, you'll find all the infomation you're looking for.

Hi all.
How do I make AutoCad NOT delete the temporary *.sv$ files it make with
Automatic Save. Pulled a bonehead stunt yesterday and closed a file that I
failed to save. Lost about 3 hours worth of work. No problem, I'll just
pull up the Auto Save file. Wrong. AutoCad deletes these files. Anyway, I
know I should have saved but didn't. Live and learn.

Thx.

I have the same problem. Just started in the last few weeks. Yesterday I
lost about 2 hours due to a freak cut/paste error.

Apparently, the .sv$ file is deleted under normal operations when Autocad
closes. The .sv$ remains if Autocad terminates under abnormal conditions.
This doesn't help if files are mistakenly deleted after Autocad closes
(which was my problem). You may want to use the .bak option and set your
autosave to something like 10 minutes. This still would not have saved me,
but in most cases will work.

C.Perez

In most cases you will be told the the SV$ file will be deleted when you
exit autocad gracefully (not crash). You can use the BAK option to always
create a BAK file when exiting and set your autosave to a short duration.
If for some bizarre and unexplainable reason you need to save the SV$ file
for what ever reason you can redefine the exit command to copy the file to
another file before Acad actually deletes it and exits!

Is it just me or does autosave not work? It keeps setting itself back
to 120 minutes. What about saving a file to recover when crashing? Why
does it bother when the file it creates is invalid? As good as AutoCAD
is, it's still unsatisfactory in some departments.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me why i cant get autosave to work in Acad2002 i have it
set to save at 10 minute intervals onto my 'C' drive in a specially named
folder. I am working over a peer to peer network where the dwgs we work off
are on a fileserver. Please help.

If you do a qsave every nine minutes, it will reset the autosave clock and
it will never create the autosave. Could that possibly be what is
happening?

A few things:

Set ISAVEPERCENT to 0
Set ISAVEBAK to 1
Do not rely on Autosave.... the BAK file is a copy of your DWG up to the
point of your previous QSAVE
QSAVE often
Have a back-up copy of any data of value

Autosave does not update the Bak file. I creates a saved file that is closed
when you exit the drawing normally.
If you crash, then the autosave file is there current to the last point of
the Autosave.

Do a manual qsave every chance you get.

set isavepercent to 0 so you create a full back up and not just
partial....this is with every qsave....

the autosaves are deleted when you exit cad unless exitted abnormally
