Help with animation

Hi I hope someone here can point me in the right direction with this question.

I want to do a similar animation of a globe as can be seen in this video on youtube starting at about 4 minutes in. You can see the texture on the sphere moving in on itself. First the red color gets covered by the rest of the texture, then the yellow, then green etc. until the land closes in on itself.

You can also see the sphere getting smaller, but the landmass remaining the same size. It's just the texture in between that gets scaled.

What tools/techniques in 3dsmax can be used to achieve this?
