Animation help - transition frames not being created by Maya...

Recently for a class I have online, we have been trying to animate a simple character. For some reason, when I set a keyframe, And then later another keyframe, maya jumps straight to the next keyframe without giving the smoot transistion frames that it's apparently supposed to give. My teacher is unavailble for this week and I need to get this project done.

Is there a setting I'm missing?

I have reset all of maya's settings to the original settings but that didn't seem to help.

Help please.

I've had that happen to me in Maya2015. Even when I view the key frames in the graph editor, the What keys were steps and not smooth. Actually, keyframing was a little wacky the first few times I uses Maya2015. What version of maya are you using? It cleared when I deleted my preferences and restarted maya. Good luck.

Check the weighting on your tangents in the 'Graph Editor'.
