Hi guys
I have a very simple surface:
two sinple revolve surface with a skin command caping them
the surface sillet should be able to fillet the edge and trim off the sharp edge surface.
but it does not. Any suggestion what Alias is doing here?
I attached the file.

Hi,
Without even attempting to do anything, your construction options are not what they should to be, under normal working conditions in alias.
You are using rational flags for your fillet geometry. You shouldnt, that s why you are having problems.
Alias is a surface modeller, it is not a solid modeller like solidworks.
If you try to change your contruction options to, say, catia V5 (non-rational flags), you will achieve what you are looking for and expected.
If you still have problems, let me know.
Hope that helped.
Good luck 🙂

Hello,
As you probably have figured out yourself, Alias is a totally diferent animal than rhino.
I must advise you the way you should model in alias is totally different to rhino's. Alias is a lot more fussier about geometry, more intolerant.
Anyway, it is not too important to know what it is, you should just know that you should not be using it in alias.
In Construction options, scroll down and you see a header named RATIONAL FLAGS...expand that....You will see that if you pick solidworks preset, the boxes will be ticked in rational flags, whereas if you chose catia V5 preset, they will show unticked.
Use always catia V5 settings. It s my advice, from my experience.
Note: If you wanna really see what is happening try this:
With catia v5 settings go to palette CURVE/CIRCLE, uncheck periodic option, use 360 as angle, and make a degree 5, 1 span circle. Observe CV structure and layout.
Now without touching anytihng and withing same file, go to construction options and change them to SOLIDWORKS.
Now create same circle like last time. Observe CV's. A lot heavier, heavier maths, and a much more perfect circle.
Alias is a free surface modeller like Icem, and they do not use rational flags generally....They love light maths, which is where the best surfaces come from.
That s it basically. If you are used to rhino (which is fine) and are transitioning to alias, it s like driving a ford fiesta and changing to a ferrari :). I know rhino like the palm of my hand.
Just make sure rational flags are OFF, always.
Did you try with them off? Better results?
Let me know if you still have problems and i ll look into it.
I maintain being unable to do a surface fillet like I do in Rhino.
Either I get max span errors and both surfaces are cliped
or it works but one surface is cliped away.
The round tool of course works well.

With a different shape it works well.

Hi,
I made a little video to show you what is going on, why it does not work and how to fix it.
Hope that helped.

Hi there,
Glad I could help.
I don't have a clue why alias does it, it clearly shouldnt....I save every 10 minutes, because of such behaviour.... Most of the times I think it s due to bugs, it gets confused, other times, it is because it is not very robust. Maybe the way the software is designed doesnt help that much for the undos, history in alias is very peculiar. Has always been like so. So there is nothing wrong on your side, not your fault...
Good luck, have fun 🙂
