Check shadow transparancy in ground plane options from hardware shade options.

Window Diaplay > Hardware Shade Options

Enable Environment Effects > Ground Plane (should be ticked on)

Edit Environment > Ground Plane > Shadow Transparancy !

Smiley Very Happy

...these "buttons" only control the shadows on the ground. Are they supposed to have effect also on "self shadows"?

I still use 2010...did this change in 2011?

kind regards

found a solution, its possible when turning the shadow throwing light very low. Use two lights, one to lighten the scene and one very low to throw shadows...
