Planar surface fails while all should be planar and closed

I am just rebuild an iPhone 6 body and put down the lines and corner curves to use my rail to with

annoyingly I run into this issue now when I want to cap the front face.

genertion curves and rail curves are all made by hand and I cannot figure out where a hole should be

or if lines are not 2D.

I have the file attached if you want to take a look at it.

Here is a different approach, I made draft side faces, the blend surfaces and planar command still failed

but when I lofted left and right edge and then moved the CVs up down left and right to make the face bigger trimming worked.

so when trim works then obviously edges and surfaces are plana. so why did the planar in the first step not work?

Hey

The simple solution Align surfaces... how I came across this video here that may assist you onwards 09:15 here shows a very good technique worth learn his principles and apply it on your design.

Hope it helps, Happy modelling

actually I think my draft surfaces were minimally off. not sure why. but with blend corners it never worked. with lines it worked.

So I redrafted the square extruded the surfaces again, added the blends and all caps well.

maybe I had move still one when drawing the keypoint curves and moved one a mini hair line or so.

The Set Planar tool can be quite finicky.  It sometimes will just not want to cooperate; don't waste your time trying to make it work.

Just build a 1x1 Plane and cut it manually.

Oddly that also worked well so I assume Luke your said the tool is buggy or uber picky

Yes, it has been like that for a long time.  They made some changes to it recently and it is now MUCH better, but I still find that sometimes it just doesn't want to work where it really should have no problems.
