NURBS curves from MESH

Hi Experts,

1. I have to start a new project at work, which involves reverse engineering NURBS surfs. From a given mesh.
2. How do I best create nurbs crvs. from mesh edges?
3. How do I create deg. 5 crvs. from deg. 1 crvs. that I get from the mesh? (I haven't found an accurate method for doing this).
4. Should I create the primary surfs. like the screen by extracting its boundary crvs or by hand modeling a primitive plane to fit the mesh and then trimming it?

I am reading thru the Alias on-board help like a maniac, but really I feel pretty much lost, so any help with your tips and or describing appropriate work flows would be REALLY appreciated.
