Hello Rafael,

I would like to understand your issue, so please answer to these questions:

- when start Advance Steel (AS) the drawing is in mm ?

- when you create a new drawing in AS and choose template AS Template, you get a drawing in mm ?

- what do you mean by your template ? is it a template created by you from scratch ? Or started from another AS template ?

Regards,

Emy

Hello Emanuel,
Yes, when you start AS everything in millimeters
-When I choose the template as drawing, object properties are in inches.
-I started my model from scratch, but I did in AutoCad, I would use it on AdvanceSteel.

Regards,
Rafael

Hello Rafael,

It is strange that when first open AS you have Metric and when create new drawing using AS template you get Imperial, because the AS template is used by default when first open AS.

I would like you to make two verifications:

1. When first open AS (and it is in mm): do you find the layers Beams, Bolts and Plates ?

2. Please open the following location:

C:\ --> Program Data -->  Autodesk --> Advance Steel 2015 --> Shared --> Support --> Templates

Do you find the following templates ?

AS_Template.dwt

mm_AS_Template.dwt

I will wait for your reply.

Regards,
Emy

Dear Emanuel,
Yes, I think all layers.
I checked the folder contains no files (AS_Template.dwt mm_AS_Template.dwt)

thanks,
Rafael

Hello Rafael,

It seems that the template of Advance Steel is not where is should be.
Most probably this is the reason of different units: when start AS, no default template is found, so it start with an AutoCAD template which is in metric system. When you create a new drawing with you template, you template is in imperial system.

I suggest to use the Repair option of installation.

Please open Control Panel --> Uninstall a program --> select Advance Steel 2015

--> select Unistall / Change --> use the option Repair or Reinstall --> select Reinstall

After that please check if you find the file AS_Template.dwt in the location:

C:\ --> Program Data -->  Autodesk --> Advance Steel 2015 --> Shared --> Support --> Templates

I will be waiting for you reply.

Regards,

Emy

Hi,

i don't know, how fare you are gone already with the steps, but here is, what i understand from Rafael, and how i would solve it:

Whatever drawing you are in, if Advance Steel is on top of ACAD, you can very easy change the used units:

For this go to the Home tab and call the project settings.

In the dialog go to Length unit and change it to the requested one.

002.png

You could also type "units" in the commandline and change it from there. The model is recreated with the new unit definition and you can work on it.

best regards

Udo

Hi,

this value is saved in the *.dwg-file. So whenever you open the same file, you have the same value.

What you can do is to save the empty drawing as a template (*.dwt-file) on your system. Then you can use this one to start a new model.

best regards Udo

I looked in the following folder:

C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 2015\Shared\Support\Templates

I found two templates:

ASTemplate.dwt and mm_ASTemplate.dwt

I deleted ASTemplate.dwt and re-named mm_ASTemplate.dwt to ASTemplate.dwt

I want to modify advance steel template.

I have done a copy of ASTemplate  in this location C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 2016\Shared\Support\Templates

rename it and after i have changed the target of Advance Steel shortcut to new template.

If I want to make some modification to this my template, should I use Advance Steel or pure Autocad for this..?

Best regards

 Hi,

You should modify / customize the AS template file using pure Autocad ONLY.

It is enough to close the current AS session (if any) and open an Autocad session. Then open the DWT file.

Best regards,
Emy
