I've downloaded the advanced steel plug in onto my computer and I'm unsure on how to get this plug in into autocad so i can start using it, how can i do this?

What plugin have you downloaded? Advance Steel comes in 2 versions, standalone and bundled with AutoCAD. After install it should have an icon on the desktop to start Advance Steel

Yes it has came up with an icon like it would with any other autodesk package. When i click on the icon an alert comes up saying 'Error, a suitable autocad package can not be found'. Is this because my autocad is 2017 and the plug in is 2015?

You can only run Advance Steel on its associated version of AutoCAD. Advance Steel 2017 & AutoCAD 2017, Advance Steel 2016 & AutoCAD 2016 and so on.

If you have AutoCAD 2017 installed, then run this first then close it down. Then launch the Advance Steel icon.
