Parting of the Autodesk Clouds?

Good Day,

I have been looking into using Autodesk 360 to collaborate with clients and colleagues, and am a bit confused on which cloud to access when.

I realize there are more cloud spaces than what i have listed below, but these are the ones I am currently experimenting with.

My guess... (insert head scratching here)

Online / mobile device Editing? AutoCAD 360 - https://client.autocad360.com/

Cloud backup? Autodesk 360 - https://360.autodesk.com/

Project Collaboration? Autodesk 360 - https://myhub.autodesk360.com/portal/

Here is what I think I know after a bit of looking around, please correct or enlighten me if I am off track..

Autodesk 360

  1. The "https://myhub.autodesk360.com/portal/" and "https://360.autodesk.com/" below are separate logins, yet within the same Autodesk 360 account and cloud space.
  2. Documents in either cloud are completely separate from each other.
  3. //myhub seems to be geared toward active project collaboration, where //360 seems to be geared toward static cloud files.
  4. Workflow?... while collaborating on a project, would a user post drawings, documents, etc to //myhub, then discuss, tweak, finalize the document / drawing, and after finalized move the drawing to //360 for formal issue to team members?..

AutoCAD 360

Yet another cloud space, this one seems to be geared toward online editing of native dwg files.

I have been working in companies where much time is wasted trying to find a drawing via windows explorer, and checking to ensure that drawing is the most current version, for that reason I have not been a fan of using windows explorer as an interface for users to access their drawings.  As soon as users are able to make their own directories and files, the collective head scratching begins (especially when that user moves on to another project or company).

While playing with the Autodesk / AutoCAD clouds, I have the same documents in multiple places, I'm kind of like that squirrel that goes and buries the acorns with great excitement, and then forgets where I buried them..  Autodesk why so many options, and which one is going to last?...

I am a bit confused with Autodesk's direction with the cloud, any advice, learnings, thoughts on clearing up these clouds would be greatly appreciated.

must get out of the clouds, and back to work now..

Regards,

Doug

Hi Doug,

I moved your post to a question and I will give it a shot to answer this. Lets start with the a basic description of each of these products.

Autodesk 360:
http://360.autodesk.com

This is the current implementation of Autodesk and the Cloud. This is a place to post files, share files, and sync files. For example if you have one of the AutoCAD 2013 or newer desktop products then you can automatically sync your files to the Autodesk 360 site.

You can also upload or download files using your WEB Browser, view the files and share them with others.

This is also tied to the AutoCAD 360 that is a form of AutoCAD in the cloud. From inside Autodesk 360, you can right click on the DWG and select Edit online using Autodesk 360. So you are still using the same storage but editing with a cloud based app instead of a desktop app.

What I like to share at AU and to others when I explain this is that you can also view the files. So if you are at a clients office, or even on the phone, you could let them view the file and then give feedback through comments, or if in person directly to you. They don't need to own any Autodesk software, they can just use the free Autodesk 360 account.

There is also a Mobile version that goes with Autodesk 360 and the best way to think of it is as an extension of the WEB version. You can view the same files, comment on the files and even add markups. There are both iOS and Android versions. Note that the files need to be uploaded to the Autodesk 360 WEB site before you can see them on the mobile device. This allows you to use your phone or better yet a tablet to go offsite and view files from your mobile device.

Autodesk 360 Tech Preview:
http://myhub.autodesk360.com

This is what we have created these forums for and what people are asking questions about here. It's the next level of the Autodesk 360 mentioned above but more around collaboration. You create projects, upload files, share projects with others and then collaborate on these files. It has a new viewer that allows for some amazing searches and filtering of the files based on what type they are.

Because it's a Tech Preview, it's work in progress and we continually working on it based on all this feedback.

Autodesk 360 Mobile:

We also have a new Mobile viewer to go along with the Tech Preview and it's an extension of the new Autodesk 360 Tech Preview. It also is work in progress and we are getting feedback for just like here. The team has a very exciting new tools that will be released with each new update. So it also is work in progress.

AutoCAD 360"
https://www.autocad360.com/

This is a cloud based online editor like AutoCAD. So think of it as another tool, but you are not tied to one computer. As long as you have Internet access, you can log into your account and modify files.

It also has a Mobile version and it's tied to the WEB version. So you can use your mobile device to make these small changes at a construction site, or a clients office.

All these tools share the same single signon that Autodesk uses, so you don't have to remember anything special to access the accounts, just download the apps, or bookmark the WEB Sites.

I look at these as three different tools with multiple ways of accessing them.

AutoCAD 360 is for editing and you can use WEB or Mobile devices. This might be for you or the person in the office that goes out in the field. That part can vary based on the workflow.

Autodesk 360 is the original Autodesk cloud offering that took advantage f WEB, Mobile and Sync from AutoCAD, AutoCAD based vertical products and Inventor.

Autodesk 360 Tech Preview is a Tech Preview of taking this to the next level and making it more about collaboration and project based. The older version did not understand the concept of projects.

Again these are all tools that are designed to help you share, view and even edit your files from the cloud including using your mobile devices. Autodesk 360 also has an amazing new viewer that will view more Autodesk file formats then anything else out there. In the past you had to download multiple viewers to see just some of these file types.

We have hosted a couple hangouts online that covered some of these basic concepts. You can find a link to the papers I created as well as videos of the actual hangouts, be sure to check those out as well. Also we are working on doing more of these hangouts in the future, so keep an eye on the side bar here for when the next hangout will be.

Take a look at the "Share a Tip" board for these links.

Hope this helps answer your questions and thanks for checking out all our Cloud offerings, and providing comments on the Tech Preview.

Last but not least we have the IdeaStation, so if you want to share enhancements or new features, please post those in the IdeaStation.
