trim and insert

I have a block that is a C L for a center line and would like to trim the polyline away from it after I insert it. I know this can be done but I have no idea how to make it work. Maybe some type of circle or something around where I insert it and then trim out the inside of the circle, then erase the circle. I'm not quite sure how to accomplish what I need. Could someone please help me with this?

if you block wipeout into the centerline block behind the text when you place it in drawing it has the effect you describe and it's easier to achieve
