stream linestyle

Hi all,

 

I am trying to create a custom complex linestyle for a stream. It's a line with 3 circles/dots. For the dots I want to actually create the circles. I know how to create shapes, compile and load linestyles. For some reason it does not work. Would appreciate any help.

You're missing a bunch of comma separators, e.g. between the red ) ( above, and as copied and pasted into Notepad, with word wrapping and a wide-enough working window, at the ends of all lines.

 

[Also, it may be just a function of "the system," but when I copied and pasted, I ended up with a bunch of Unicode characters interspersed that would mess things up.]

 

I'm dying to know what a shape with that long a definition looks like, since it seems so out of character with your description of the linetype.  Couldn't you accomplish the latter with Text characters imbedded, instead of a Shape?  Just choose a font with a truly or very nearly circular capital or lower-case O, and use that.  Or, modify AutoCAD's FENCELINE1 linetype to use multiple insertions of the same circular Shape it uses.

I'm trying to create the above by using a shape. The existing linestyles don't act the way I need them to. I need 3 shapes or one shape containing 3 elements (the latter being what you saw in the previous code).

 

I'm just not sure how to proceed...maybe it's not possible?... I may be doing this whole process incorrectly...

I've done something similar with several concentric scaled circles using the OOTB shape file.  By the time its printed it shows up as a solid dot.

I would do it with embedded Text, in a Style that uses the Wingdings font, whose lower-case L character is a solid round dot.  If you make the embedded Text three of them [possibly with spaces between, if it looks better to you], they will always be in a straight line, even when the path entity is curved, so it would be better to make it three separate single-character Text entries [line segment, gap, Text, gap, Text, gap, Text, gap, alternatively concluding line segment].

You would need to have a Text Style in the drawing called WINGDINGS, using that font, with no height, width factor or obliquing angle.  You can adjust the 10.0 to get a spacing between dot groups that you like, and other numbers to tweak the spacing between dots, etc.

You would similarly need to have three "insertions" of the Shape [or, if you went with dgorsman's suggestion, of multiple Shapes at the same location] in the linetype definition, with similar gap spacings between them.  Or, you could build all three dots into one Shape definition, and "insert" it only once, but that would have the same drawback as one Text element with three characters + spacings included, that on curves [which I assume are common parts of things like stream routes] the groupings wouldn't follow the curvature but would always be straight.

 

If you did it with a Shape with parallel-line "hatching" in it as in your illustration, you could probably get by with a much lower density of lines, and therefore a very much shorter Shape definition.  You can experiment with typical resulting dot sizes and typical plotted lineweight to figure how closely you would need to space the lines to have the dots appear solid when plotted.  If you did it with concentric circles, you would use the same determination of the spacing between them, but I expect the Shape definition could be even shorter, since one circle "covers more territory" than each line going across.

 

One advantage of the Shape approach, assuming the Shape is defined in your standard file for such things that's in your Support File Search Path list, is that you won't have any problem loading the linetype in a drawing in which you don't happen to have the Wingdings Style defined.

Indeed. 🙂 I'm trying to not create a bunch on text styles. Lately, though, when I create shapes and compile our standard customized .lin - the linetypes do not load (there's usually an error of somesort). But that's another issue all together!

One thing that may be tripping you up, and that many people may not be aware of, is that the last line of code in both .lin files and .shp files needs to be completed with an Enter at the end.  [This is not true of hatch pattern definition files, or .lsp files, and probably some other things.]  If you are in such a file in Notepad, and hit ctrl+End, it should go to an empty line below the last line of linetype or shape definition code.  [It can be more than one line below without hurting anything.]  If it goes to the end of the last line of code, hit Enter, save the file, and try loading it again.

Bad definition of STREAM at line xxx (which is the line below *STREAM... etc) of the file... (which is line file to which stream.lin was inserted at the end therof)

R, A, S, X, or Y expected in file

what in the world is going wrong?  do I need to make a shp and compile something or ?  I'm LOST

I couldn't say....  There's no Shape involved.  I get that message only if I try to load it in a drawing that does not have a Text Style called Wingdings defined in it.  But where I am now, I'm on ol' ACAD2004.  I'll try to remember to check when I next have access to 2014 [I don't have 2008 anywhere, in case there's anything about that particular release that's affecting it].

I take it back, at least in part.  It turns out that's not the case with .lin files as I thought.  I haven't messed with my .shp files and recompiled them to confirm about those, but I do know it is true of some customization files -- I had a mistaken recollection that .lin was one of those file types.
