One option you can try: the Express Tools AttOut command allows you to export attribute info to a text file (tab delimited, I think), which can be opened in Excel and then saved in Excel format (if you wish).
DataExtraction is another one you can try.
The best part about that - is you can also modify the attributes in bulk within Excel, then import the values back into AutoCAD. We have actually found that to come in handy from time to time.

OP: This is done (as one might guess) using the ATTIN command. Be sure not to change the format of the file after editing in Excel. As stated in Express Tools Help for ATTIN:
"Just make sure that when you save your changes you save them in a tab-delimited ASCII format; otherwise the ATTIN command will not be able to import from the file."
