Visual LISP, AutoLISP and General Customization

Trying to use the chgdynprop routine, Allen. If I call
(chgdynprop en "Distance" door_size ) where door_size is integer or real, I get
; error: bad argument type: stringp 38.0
If I use a string, I get past that point, but get:
; error: Automation Error. Invalid input
Distance is a normal linear parameter.
