Crosshair symbol changes and then can't access vlide

Every once in a while when I switch to the VLIDE window the cross hair (arrow) goes away and is replaced by a symbol that looks like cross hairs with pick box at center with () in the upper left quadrant. This especially happens if I switch to a non-AutoCAD window, then pick the Visual Lisp for AutoCAD window. The only way to stop the problem is to close AutoCAD and restart. Has anyone experienced this and what do you do to prevent or stop this annoying situation?

Usually closing vlide and pressing escape will give the crosshairs back, seems like it happens when autocad is stuck in a command or during a windowing selection.
