Attaching or linking manufacturing info to objects....

I would like to tie external information to objects, or internally for that
matter.
I have done so in the past by attaching attribute data to blocks.

I would like to somehow assign information that will pertain to how the
machining is to be performed i.e. milling a pocket, I would like
to have data stored as to how the pocket is to be machined i.e. use 1/2 end
mill, pocket is 0.480 deep, chamfer the edge etc.
Or the information might pertain to wire edm, or drilling.
We currently have a system that recognizes all this sort of information in
2d via blocks, but I would like to do also in 3d solids or an easier 2d
entity groups or something, some
way to define an "object" or "feature".

I am thinking each pocket could be represented by a polyline, and reference
that entity to a database, but that sounds complicated, and the link could
easily be broken
or disrupted.
Maybe the polyline needs to be a block with attributes?

Maybe there is a way to do directly in solids?

Anyone done similar stuff? Maybe some ideas?

Thanks a million!
