Any good customization books?

Howdy!
Can someone recommend a good customization book? My office runs A2Ki and
I'd like to teach myself to be the customization guy. I think it'd be most
useful to learn about writing lisps, creating pulldowns, and that sort of
stuff.

Thanks,
Bryan

Bryan,

At the moment your best bet is "Customizing AutoCAD 2000" by Sham Tickoo
from Autodesk Press. ISBN = 0-7668-1240-5 Try: www.autodeskpress.com
or the usual e-book stores.

(The "classic" and still best book for customization is Maximizing AutoCAD
R13 by Gesner, Middlebrrook & Tanzillo from Autodesk Press but unfortunately
it's out of print but well worth trying to find a copy!! And, no!, you can't
borrow mine!)

-- just had to mention that i have (or had -- depends how you look at it)
the R13 Maximizing AutoCAD book, and i used it alot -- the spine is broke
and i think its laying around here in 5 or 6 sections. That was an
excellent book.

I've never read Sham's work but I've received nothing but
bad feedback on it.

Do I ever agree! That book alone catapulted me into the oxygen-deprived

Ok MP, I'm seeing your opportunity for writing that book getting closer and
closer. Maybe you and TT could team up :-0 and write the next installment
of Maximizing AutoCAD, subtitled "Maximizing opportunities to accuse other
programmers as adapt as yourself of code perjury".

Bobby, that should be:

I read his customizing R14 book and thought it was ok. It was rather basic
but had some good ideas. I read through it once but never refered back to it
so I would recommend (the R14) as an intro book but not a good reference
book. Of course I have not read the 2k book so can't comment on it.

Bobby,

Who is the "MP" you refer to? And which book are you referring to when you
say "that book"?????

Is your message below intended as a response to my message -- also below? If
so, you've managed to completely confuse me. Haven't the slightest idea what
you're talking about. Sorry.

Dave,

Bobby was referring to Michael Puckett about the thread harassing him for a

Is Tony T. still being bashed around here? A real shame. He's one of the
most talented AutoLISP programmers I know -- and I know most of the better
ones -- not all, but most.

I had the privlidge of being one of the Technical Editors for the Maximizing
AutoCAD R13 book back in 1996-97. Although I've never met Tony (as I have
Rusty Gesner and Mark Middlebrook) he is a wealth of information. He *is* a
bit quirky at times but I can live with that. He does not suffer fools very
well, that's for sure. One learns to put up with Tony's ego over time. It
ain't all that bad anyway.

As far as Tony's AutoLISP code is concerned --- I can usually spot it a mile
away. Some coders are like that; they have a style, an elegance, that is
often quite distinctive. Duff Kurland and Larry Knott (both of Autodesk) had
the same distinctiveness in much of their code. They raised AutoLISP code to
an art form almost.

No one has ever questioned Tony's code. It was the rest of him that
was hard to deal with. Whatever flak he catches around here is
well-deserved.

Bash away then. He probably loves the attention -- and of course the
"bashers" play right into his hands. (I sometimes wonder at the apparent
lack of understanding of basic human psychology shown by otherwise
intelligent people.) It's amusing to watch though.

Interesting comments considering it's from you Frank. Seems to me people
around here either love you or hate you. How's that any different?

*I* wouldn't (I hope)... I too, respect Tony's code (if not his social

Sorry for the confusion Dave,

My posts intention was simply to bring attention to a disturbing trend that
I have seen in this NG. I too am opposed to the 'character bashing' that at
times can fly around this place. Most recently a lot of this kind of
activity has been aimed at MP, Michael Puckett. I'm not trying to defend
MP, he's an adult and able to do that on his own, I was simply playing off
of some recent, unfounded, accusations that were directed at him. I was
also ribbing MP about some previous threads asking him to write a book. I'm
sure that he's tired of that by now, so I won't mention it anymore. Unless
a real good opportunity presents itself 🙂

I don't have the Maximizing AutoCAD R13 book. I do have it's predecessor
for R12, Maximizing AutoLISP, by Gessner & Smith. Just looking at it you'd
think that the dog pee'd on it, chewed on it, then slept on it. And no, no
one can borrow mine either!

Agreed. Tony is an invaluable resource, and the AutoCAD community has greatly
benefited from his many technical contributions.

As for demeanor etc., we all could demonstrate better manners. Walkin' the talk
ain't as easy as it sounds, as it's easy to be lured into a word storm when your
intelligence or ethics are questioned.

Not that I've any experience to draw or reflect upon.
