I am trying to setup Vault Workgroup server and client on Windows XP. After installing, when I try to access the server from Vault Explorer I get a message "Failed to acquire a license" (Vault Explorer is installed on the same machine). I've followed some of the suggestion I found online, IPv6 is not installed on the machine, and I've checked the LICPATH.LIC file which looks like this:
SERVER virgintestxp 000000000000
(virgintestxp being the machine name).
Any other suggestions?
I've also installed the license manager. As a seperate questions is this an essential component for Vault to run?
First, you definitely need a license manager running in order to use Vault Workgroup.
Make sure you can see your vault workgroup licenses just fine from the lmtools.exe that ships with the license manager.
From a dos command shell, try to ping virgintestxp and make sure it is resolving the name to an IPv4 address instead of an IPv6 address. If your not sure, just post what you see.
If there is a firewalls running on the machine, it may be blocking the communication from the vault server to the license manager. You could try shutting it off and if that works, setup an firewall rule to allow the access before starting it back up.
If none of this helps, take a look in the vault server log (aka vlog) for the time period when you weren't able to login. The log files are typically located in the same directory as the filestore root. You can also see the logs under the "Management" node in the ADMS-Console. There may also be a licenseLog.txt in the same directory as the vlogs, but you won't see it in the console. Additional information about why it can't get a license may be shown in there.
Hope this helps,
In your licpath.lic file change the name of your machine in the file to be 127.0.0.1, then try to get a license again.
Ok, thanks for that.
I am new to Vault and I do not understand how licensing works. Do I need to apply for a license? All I have done is downloaded and run the installer. I do not understand what to look for with lmtools. I know IPv6 is not enabled. By the way I have the client and server on the same machine.
Can I also ask, I understand there are different levels of Vault - Basic, Workgroup, Collaboration, Professional. I am working on a project to integrate Vault with our own software and would like to test it with the most basic Vault. What would this product be called in Vault 2012 product range?
You need to register the product and activate the license (https://register.autodesk.com/).
This should result in a license string which you put in a file that you configure the license manager to use.
Hope this helps,
I've tried this but I cannot get beyond the Product Registration & Activation page. I am told I have an invalid product serial number. I have already installed Vault client and server and have activated them with a serial number & product key. Can you confirm that we have a license for this product and if so how do I activate it?
Also I am on beta program and have been using that without any problems. Is the licensing different for the beta product?
The server appears to be running fine, I can carry out adminstration through the server console I just cannot access it through Vault Explorer. So the two products seem to be activated and running but cannot talk to one another. Why is this? What license am I missing?
You did not need a license manager to run the Vault Professional beta server, but you definitetly need a license manager that is populated with valid licenses to use a released version of Vault Workgroup.
The reason you can run the ADMS-Console is because it does not consume a license when you log in to it.
I believe you need to go thru a registration/activation process to get a license string to put into the license manager. This is not the same as entering the product-key & serial number during the installation. As a developer, I've never actually gone thru that so I'm not sure what it involves; but I know that some of our QA folks have gone thru it so I'm confident that it works.
I suspect your best course of action to get the activation issues sorted out would be to contact your reseller and/or open a case with Product Support. If you are on subscription I think you can open a case thru the subscription portal.
We are ADN members not customers so we have no reseller. I am a developer working on Vault integration into our own software. I want to ensure that everything works with the various flavours and versions of Vault.
Is the activatation process the same for ADN members. Are we licensed to run all of these products?
