Vault Install

Hello,

We are on the cusp of installing Vault at work.

Before we purchased the software, we wanted to clarify a few questions we have about the prerequisites for the software to work propperly.

First, we know Vault requires SQL Server, and comes with the Express version of SQL Server.

If we ONLY use SQL Server Express, what are the limitations as opposed to purchasing Standard or Enteprise editions.

Next, do we need to get SQL Server with CALs (Client Access License), or not?

Finally, if we were to implement SQL Express for now, what would it require to upgrade to SQL Standard or Enterprise?

Will it require a complete reinstall of Vault Server, or should an uninstall and fresh install of SQL suffice?

Thanks as always!

Please take a look at the following link for the difference in the SQL editions.

SQL Editions comparison

Yes, you will need to get a SQL CAL for each user that accesses Vault.

If you start of with SQL Express, you can upgrade it to the SQL Standard edition without uninstalling or changing the Vault installation.

If you stay with Express, you do not need to purchase CALS.

One thing with upgrading, if you plan on upgrading to a 64bit version of SQL, you will need to backup, uninstall, install SQL, install Vault then restore.  You cannot upgrade from a 32bit version of SQL to a 64bit version.

So if we get the Standard version of SQL, then we do not need CALs?

No, the Express version does not need CALs.  Standard and Enterprise will need CALs or per processor licensing.  We highly recommend talking to a Microsoft Licensing Specialist in regards to licensing SQL or Windows products.
