It looks to me like there was a network hiccup during the backup process.
Have you backed up to this location successfully in the past?

I would suggest assuming that the backup was not successful - and start a
new backup. If no errors occur, it is probably save to say it was a
transient glitch.

Yes i've backed up to this location repeatedly. It's only since we've upgraded to ADMS 2009 that this error has showed up. i've been working on setting an automatic backup and thought i'd do a manual first to make sure all passwords, impersonations, etc. were working correctly. that's when i received this error. Again, it's happened every time with 2009.

Did you upgrade to SQL express when you upgraded to 2009? Or is it possible
something has changed on the remote machine? The failure seems to happen
when SQL server is backing up the database, so could reflect a lack of
permissions on the share for the user that SQL server is running under.

Here is a pretty terse description of the error on Microsoft technet:

NOTE: Do this OFF hours, when no one is actively communicating to Vault.

1) Start > Run.. > type 'services.msc' (no quotes) > OK
2) Find service 'SQL Server (AUTODESKVAULT)' > r-click > Properties
3) Activate 'Log On' tab
4) Under this Account > put a domain\user that has write access to
remote backup location you were planning to backup to.
5) Restart service 'SQL Server (AUTODESKVAULT)'

Repeat your backup test, and report to thread.
