Vault 2012 with only Inventor 2010

Reading the requirements of Inventor 2010 update to allow the use of Vault 2012 has this listed:

  • After this Client Update is installed onto Autodesk Inventor 2010 SP4, to ensure normal functionality when accessing Inventor DWG files from within Vault Explorer 2012, perform the following operations: Close all applications, including Autodesk Inventor 2010 SP4, then start and close Autodesk Inventor 2012 or Autodesk Inventor View 2012. This operation is required after every Inventor 2010 SP4 session.

This seems to imply you must also have Inventor 2012 installed on the client machines. We intend to stick with Inventor 2010 (we don't even have 2012 installed) for a while.  Using Vault 2012 is only necessitated by the fact that Design Review 2010 cannot launch DWG TrueView under a 64 bit OS while ADR 2012 can.

So I am reading this right?  We can't use Vault 2012 solely with Inventor 2010 even with this client update?

Please note that Vault 2012 is available to anyone who has purchases a qualified 2012 CAD application.  Once you have satisfied that condition, Inventor 2010 SP4 becomes a qualifying CAD application for Vault 2012.  You do not need Inventor 2012.  The statement is just calling out that if you did have Inventor 2012 installed that you will have to start and stop them post this install.

Let's say both IV 2012, IV 2010 SP4, and the Vault 2012 client were all installed on the same machine.  To work with data associated with the IV 2012 install from within the Vault client, the IV 2012 must either be 'run last' or be running.  Then subsequently, to work with IV 2010 data via the Vault client, IV 2012 must be shut down and IV 2010 started to 're-register' its association with the Vault client.  But on a machine with only IV 2010 SP4 and Vault Client 2012, none of the 'stop-start' is needed as there is not a competing IV client fighting for association withe the Vault client.  Do I have this right?

I would like to clarify 2 points here.

The Readme item is Valid only when you use any Vault command on Inventor DWG inside Vault Explorer 2012. For all other file types you do not need this.

Another point is if you do not have Inventor 2012 installed (which is expected in most of the cases), running and closing Inventor View 2012 ( which always gets installed with Vault 2012 Client) is sufficient while working on Inventor DWG files inside Vault Explorer 2012.

Hope the above is clear. Please let us know if you need any further help/info.
