You should be able to find everything you need in the Vault Manager help
topics for Purge.

Purging is basically used to remove older versions of files in the Vault
that you no longer need or want to keep in the Vault. You are able to purge
"X" versions or purge by date.. eg, keep all version within the last 30 days
and keep the last 3 versions of each file. There are, of course, some rules
that may cause files not within those parameters to be kept (not purged)
because they are children of a file that is one of the last 3 versions, and
so on.

Otherwise, if you're looking for more reading material the Vault Manager
help is the place to go.

Thanks,
Bob

Purge will help to keep both your database & filestore small.
Another way to keep database size down is to reduce the # of properties that are enabled. If you don't use many of the iProperties in your files and don't need to search on them in the vault, you can dis-able them then .re-index the vault & that may reduce it's size.
