Property Definition - Number of Attachments - Items

I was thinking the "Number of Attachments" property when doing searches in Items meant the number of assoicated files attached to the item.   However it doesn't appear to be that...   So what does it actually mean?   Also is there a document that list what the properties are searching for?   Some are easy to understand what they are searching for but others need an actual description.

Files can be connected to an item two ways; associations and attachments.   When you right-click on a file and use "Assign Item", this creates an association.  You create attachments by editing the item and clicking the attachments button.  For example, if I assign item to an IPT and then subsequently edit the item and attach an XLS, there are two file relationships but only 1 of them (IPT) is an association.
