Planning to start Vault

We are on the stage of planning to install Vault-with 3 users clients and running Inventor 11. Anyone can advise what is the good version of Vault to start with?
Is it advisable to upgrade to later release of Inventor?
We're all running Windows XP.

Vault 2009 support Inventor version 11, 2008 and 2009. If you plan to
upgrade your Inventor version in near future, then Vault 2009 is
recommended. One of the benefit is you could skip Vault server side upgrade
when upgrade your Inventor version to 2008 or 2009.

BTW, I assume you have Inventor 2009 license.

The Inventor 11 Service Pack 3 Client Upgrade for Autodesk Data Management
Server (ADMS) 2009 can be downloaded from

Thanks Chee-Kit,

Yes, we have Inventor 2009 license.

What about the database server? Is it OK to use MSDE?
I am thinking to start using MSDE as oppose to Full SQL.
We have only 3 users, possibly 4 in the near future. At the moment,the size of our files is about 25 GB. I do not expect it to increase double in the near future. As for the metadata size, Is there a way i can obtain the size at the moment with Inventor 11. Would that increase dramatically with Inventor 2008 or 2009?

I'm not aware of how to estimate the metadata size based on total files
size, but I would suggest start with SQL Server 2005 Express. The main
advantage of SQL Server 2005 Express is max. database size is 4GB as compare
to MSDE which is 2 GB. The upgrade from SQL Server 2005 Express to full SQL
is not difficult. More information can be found from Advanced Configuration
Guide for Autodesk Data Management Server 2008
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9594013&linkID=9240618

Even though Vault 5 install MSDE by default, it can be upgraded to SQL
Server 2005 Express. Search for a folder name "UpgradeSQL2005" inside the
installer CD, and run the setup after installed the Vault server. Vault 2008
and 2009 install SQL Server 2005 Express by default.

As we are only looking for 4-5 users max. in the near future, Could you give us recommendation with the ideal server operating system considering the cost and ease of use(i.e. Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or 2008).

Also, we are considering going to the "Virtual" server path
as oppose to single computer server. I know there's a lot of white paper publication stating that the best setup is a single computer server. But because of availability of this new system within our company's IT Department, we are looking at this option. Is there anyone out there that using Virtual server for ADMS? Is this easier to set up as oppose to physical server? Any maintenance/troubleshooting/reliability issues using this system?

Windows XP works fine for your case, but personally I prefer Windows Server
2003. I don't know the cost of Windows OSes, for ease of use, the Windows
OSes are almost the same. Note that only Vault 2009 is supported on Windows
Server 2008.

From experience, buy full SQL.
We hit the meta data limit very quickly, but that was using v4, it might be different now. But we had so much down time due to this. Its not worth the pain. We are 3 users with 12 gig of files.
Expect problems getting that much data into vault.
Expect problems with autoloader.
I would give yourselves 3-4weeks for the data validation process.
Use your VAR.

Microsoft Small Business Server Premium Edition is the way to go!

It is based on Windows Server, but has a full version of SQL with it. Also:
Exchange with Push Email;
Sharepoint;
ISA Firewall;
VPN;
Solid backup framework.

Do you also have ProductStream?

Who uses your data?...if purchasing, sales or manufacturing they will need a way to access vault data.
