If you are reading this you probably do use Autodesk Vault for storing Design Files and would agree with idea to store Design Data there as well.
Almost all Vault users I know do agree that "Enforce unique filenames" option should be ON.
Here I want to discuss possible ways of keeping Design Data for more than one localization of Inventor in Vault.
The problem is Design Data files for different localization do use same filenames (different sub-dfolders):
Examples are:
.../Cable & Harness/<LOCAL>/Cable&HarnessDefaultLibrary.iwl
.../Cable & Harness/<LOCAL>/Harness.iam
.../Tube & Pipe/<LOCAL>/piping runs.iam
.../XLS/<LOCAL>/Thread.xls
.../XLS/<LOCAL>/Clearance.xls
(the list is probably incomplete)
Where <LOCAL> is name of sub-folder:
"en-US"
"ru-RU"
etc...
Before diving in the problem I hoped it would be easy to solve it with with Vault shortcuts but it seems not the proper way.
Of course I can generate an idea for Inventor team to use different (localization-dependant) filenames for DesignData but I'm interested in workaround that could be implemented today.
The only option till now is manual copying updated files to corresponding working sub-folders (while don't have dublicates inside Vault at all).
Any ideas?
I'm not sure I understand why you would have multiple instances of any of those files. I don't know about cable & harness, but i know that when I start a new Tube & Pipe assembly, Inventor uses Piping Runs.iam as a template, and creates a NEW file from it for each job. As it is being created I am prompted for a file name, so I can add the job number as a prefix to avoid any duplication. I just did a search in my Vault and after 6 years of Tube & Pipe the only copy of Piping Runs.iam in my vault is in the Design Data folder.

Ok, now I got the idea.

Nowadays I recommend my clients just put their Templates and Design Data outside the vault. It's not that I'm opposed to keeping them there and in the past this was my "standard" setup but I found that if the templates/styles were changed by the CAD Admin, getting everyone updated was just a hassle - ditto for one you upgraded to a newer release and needed to migrate all these files. Generally speaking, customers aren't needing to track revision and history on templates in most cases. Workspace Sync in vault pro wasn't the answer either since it only deals with files already in your local workspace but doesn't account for new files added to vault for which you haven't yet got a local copy (however, I did build a custom app for 2 customers based on Vault Mirror that would pull down only certain directories (templates) on each login via a script.
I know tihs doesn't answer your question but just gives another perspective.
