Moving/Migrating Vault to another machine

Hi,
I need guidence on moving/migrating vault to a new machine.
Here is the scenario:

Server 1:
named PILOT.
Runs Vault 2011.

Proposed server 2:
named VAULT
will run Vault 2012 and will be the new server for Autodesk inventor

Both are on the network.

My question is how to move the vault to another machine.

Here is what I am planning.

Back up the vault on machine 1
on server 2 install vault 2012
do a restore from the vault backup on machine 1 over the network.
migrate the vault during restore.

or is the following path ok

Backup the vault on machine 1
on server 2 install vault 2011.
do a restore from the vault back up on machine 1 over the network.
on server 2 upgrade to vault 2012.
migrate the vault during upgrade.

Please guide which one is the better way (with less chances of problems)

also two servers mentioned have different names(Pilot and Vault) . Does this cause any problem in vault operation afterwards?.

any help is appreciated

Regards

Lalit

Have  look at this post, might give you an insight to some steps -

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Vault/How-to-upgrade-from-Vault-2011-to-Vault-2012-including-...

Generally I would opt for option 2, build server 2 same as server 1, backup server 1, restore to server 2 then upgrade server 2.

Are you using just base Vault with the free SQL Express?

There's a few things to consider and be wary of but you're on the right track.

Hope this helps.

That's pretty close to what I did this weekend.

Server 1:

ADMS 2011

SQL Server 2005 Express

Server 2:

Clean newinstall of ADMS 2011

SQL Server 2008R2 Express

1. Backup to Server 2.

2. Restore to Server 2 ADMS 2011.

3. Validated the restore (open Vault 2011 Client and poke around a little).

4. Migrated/updated to ADMS 2012.

5. Opened SQL Server Management Studio and execute these queries to confirm server names

SELECT * FROM KnowledgeVaultMaster.dbo.Workgroup

SELECT * FROM master.dbo.sysservers

SELECT @@SERVERNAME

Lalit,

As the other comments suggest, either scenrio should be fine.  First scenario listed will reduce the effort needed.

What you can also do is install any hotfixes or service packs for 2012 onto the server named Vault before running the restore of the backup taken from server Pilot.  This will roll all the migration steps into one continual process and reduce some picks and clicks.

Depending on your environment, you may need to copy the backup locally to server Vault before running the restore.

Mark, In fact I am going through the same problem as you did when you migrated to Vault 2011 and tried to do the back up.

The symptoms are same. I hope it works outfor me  like it did for you.

Are you using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express or the full edition?

This issue is regarding  our existing vault. Which is Vault 2011. It runs on windows server 2003 standard. We use SQL Server 2005 Workgroup. and when we go for the back up we get the errors similar to you. the link is following

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Vault/Migrating-to-Vault-2012-Backup-Error/td-p/3334435

I am working with Autodesk support on this.

We have corrected the different server name issue and am now at a point were the ADMS throws error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".. when this was happening with you, did you try to log into the vault from the client machines? if yes did it give you any error?
