Migrating Vault 2008 on old server to Vault 2012 on new server

I was going to use one of the suggestions in one of the other posts of installing Vault 2008 on new server, backing vault on old server, restoring to new server and upgrading, but we are doing this for a client and there is no sign and no documentation of the serial number and product key. Is there a time period that the software will run without a product key so I can install it on the new server long enough to get the data migrated and upgraded? Or, is there a better method?

I would look at the License Manager.  Do they still have 2008 license in it?  You can point the new server to the old license server.

FYI - Operations in the ADMS-Console such as backup and restore do not require any vault licenses.

So you could get the vault database(s) migrated from 2008 to 2010 to 2012 without licenses.
