Forced to check out assembly

I keep running into this problem. Sometimes when I try to add a subassembly to another assembly in Inventor 2008 I a forced to check it out. When I initially add the subassembly all is well but as soon as I add a constraint or move the part in space I'm prompted to check it out. If I refuse it will be highlighted in red in the vault toolbar and I won't be able to check in the top level assembly until I check out and save the subassembly. This is not how this should work, right? I shouldn't have to check out a part or assembly just to add it somewhere else, right?

Thanks,

Roman

We've all been fighting with Autodesk about this
for years.  It's a bit better than it used to be but I also still get asked
to check things out just because they are in a different positional
representation or for other reasons.  Inventor still dirties subassemblies
and components added to assemblies.

Autodesk, when will these file save bugs be fixed
once and for all?

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to deal with it.

Its so disappointing to see no improvement on this issue even after 5 years !!

I have this checked-in assembly that I am trying to use in readonly mode (Dont want to checked out). I try to use a different positional rep thats stored into that readonly assembly & inventor wants me to check it out.
