Error 29001: [Acces forbidden ]

Hi,
I get an install Error (Access forbidden) with ADMS4 server setup on an XP SP2 machine. I tried re-installing .Net Framework 1.1 plus service pack to resolve this problem. But no luck here.

I have included all the log files I could find that seemed related to this error.

Can you check the properties (Home Directory) of your default web site
in Internet Information Services? You should see something like the
attached.

Thanks,
Jeff

My properties are differents. I will reset the default web site and try again. Is there some permissions to add manually?

Thks.

I have re-installed IIS from scratch. To get a blank page working, I added an index.htm file in the root and change the permissions on the files to get a blank page on an anonymous login. I get an [Access denied] this time. Is there a step in the config of IIS that is needed but not documented?

Here's my new log files. Thks again.

I don't think you want to add an index.htm; one link that I found talks
about the Execute Permissions property. This should be set, as in my
screenshot, to "Scripts only".

Can you try this?

I did set it like the screenshot on my first attempt, before re-installing IIS. After re-installing, the default was set to none, so I tried "Scripts only" on the fresh install. I still get access denied. So, this error, it's related to permissions on the web site?

You may want to give a utility like filemon a shot to help narrow down your
problem with respect to permissions (and the web site via IIS). You can
download this via www.sysinternals.com. The utility is called filemon. It's
free and quite helpful in troubleshooting these types of problems as well as
any problems you might encounter with file store permissions, error 111,
etc.

Download filemon, install it and run it on your server where the
installation isn't going well for ADMS.
Check all volumes (local hard drives and named pipes), clear the entry and
start capturing events.
Run the ADMS installaiton and let it fail with the 29001 error you
described.
Go back to filemone and either save the log as a file (e.g., filemon.log) or
use the find function (Control F) to search and find any instances of
"ACCESS DENIED" or simply "DENIED" in the log file.

Typically, you'll find some instances during the installation that have the
'access denied' error thrown in the filemon log file. This line will
identify the process that's failing (usually something in the installer like
aspnet_wp.exe or w3wp.exe if it's strictly within IIS), the folder that
lacks permissions (could be C:\Inetpub\wwwroot) as well as the user account
that lacks permissions.

So, what you're looking for specifically is the folder and user account. It
might be the SYSTEM account, or it could be something else. Use this
information to correct any permissions problem that's identified and that
might get your installation going successfully.

If you've preconfigured IIS to host an internal web site or something along
those lines, then the IIS might need to be uninstalled and reinstalled
(obviously taking steps to make sure whatever you have utilizing IIS isn't
broken or lost). Most of the time we don't have any problems with IIS unless
there's another application using it that's not installed in such a way to
"play well with others". 🙂

Anyway, hope that helps you out..

Here's something else you could do as an alternative to using filemon (as I
suggested in my other reply).

You can enable security logging and then check the security event log to see
what user account (if that's what's being restricted) is being denied
access. Please make sure you have disabled any firewalls you have enabled
and/or virus protection turned off, too.

- Open the Control Panel.
- Double-click on the Administrative Tools.
- Double-click on the Local Security Settings
- Expland the Local Policies
- Select the Audit Policy
- Enable Failures for the following:
Audit Account Logon Events
Audit Logon Events
Audit object access
- Retry to install Vault

When the error occurs again, check the security log in the Event Viewer to
see which account(s) are denied access. Of course, if this doesn't help
you're best bet is still to uninstall/reinstall IIS to ensure it's a clean
(default) configuration.

Good luck!

I was able to finish the installation of the server by giving administrative status to all the users involved in the installation of the server. I will redo this if necessary with Audit/Filemon at a later time for the final install on the target machine.

Thks for the help.
