New Hotfixes Available

All,

 

We (the Vault team) would like to make the group aware of a new hotfix that we just released to the support page.  You can download the hotfix here for 2012, 2011 and 2010.

This latest hotfix addresses a number of potential issues around property synchronization, copy design, permissions as well as some cumulative updates depending upon the release.

 

One important fix addresses a recently discovered issue with the Purge command that has affected a limited group of customers. In some cases, the Purge command has left some unresolved file references, resulting in an unresolved reference dialog or incomplete where-used results.

 

While we work to resolve this issue, we recommend that our customers discontinue use of the Purge command, and have included technology within the latest hotfix that restricts and reduces the impact of the Purge command.

The repair we do during migration cannot repair all possible cases in vault workgroup and above; and in base vault, there isn't enough information to repair anything.

 

So for all vault tiers, we recommend you run the manual repair utility, which uses the CAD system to find missing relationships in the vault and suggest fixes where it can.  The manual repair utility will find all missing relationships, even relationships that are not missing due to the formerly broken purge.

 

The manual repair utility can find cases where it can't determine a fix and those are still included in the resulting table so you can find out about them.  You can test the behavior of those problematic assemblies and decide if you want to create another version (i.e. checkout/checkin) of the assembly which will at least correct the tip.

 

If the manual repair utility finds nothing you are good to go.

 

Once all that can be fixed is fixed, it is as safe as its going to be to enable purge again.  The fixed purge will no longer allow you to override parent restrictions as that is what caused the problems in the first place.

Thanks for the update.

 

Can the repair utility run safely while the Vault is in production use?  Or do we need ot run it at nights and weekends when users aren't adding new data?

 

We have a spare licence/workstation that we will use for running the utility.

The utility will be pulling files down to a local workspace and querying the vault to see if the dependencies in vault match the dependencies in the CAD file.  I cannot say whether or not that bandwidth usage would impact your day to day users as it would depend on the nature of the dependencies between your CAD files and what your users are doing with vault.

 

I would suggest trying it on a folder hierarchy that has a couple hundred "representative" CAD files and seeing how much of an impact it has on other users.  It would also allow you to make a rough estimate for how long the process will take.

 

If the impact is unacceptable, you could always run the utility against a seperate server which has a backup restored to it from the production server. The test server should be running the same version (same release, same service pack level, same hotfixes) as the production server.  The resulting table could be imported into the production server, although you may see some failures if files had been subsequently deleted from the production server after the backup.

It sounds like the repair utility does not do anything that would prevent concurrent normal use of the vault.  The only concern would be a potential performance drag on the system. 

 

We will do some testing, but I doubt there will be a big issue.  We only have 3-4 users on our system at a time.

Hi There,

 

At this stage we have not released a service pack update and repair utility for Vault 2011.  We do not have any immediate plans for a service pack for the 2011 release.

 

If there is an urgent need to resolve the purge issues in 2011 it may be worthwhile for you to look at migrating to Vault 2012 and apply the Service Pack there.  We realize this is not ideal but will provide a short term resolution.

After I ran the utility, I had around 3000 results. However, the utility didn't find anything in the vault that could be a match.

 

To elaborate, the column "Matching_Ref_In_Vault" and "Ref_Version" both show up with ???.

 

Now what would happen if we were to run a purge without doing anything to the 3000 files that have ??? for a matching reference? Is it really necessary to manually go in and add in all those referances?

 

It may also be worth noting that when I open up an assembly, all of the parts show up and then I check it back in through Inventor. However, the scan still says that it has missing references. Is this normal?

 

Also, it seems to be mostly library parts

The scan shouldn't be showing missing references for the newly checked-in assembly; but it should still flag prior versions of that assembly if it has missing references - assuming you are having it scan all versions, and not just the tip versions.  Is this the case?

 

BTW, it might be best if we started a new thread for any problems/concerns/questions with the reference repair utility. This thread is supposed to be for announcing new hotfixes - and I'm starting to feel like we are taking it over. <g>

Not ideal?  It's not acceptable for us to be forced into an upgrade of our Vault to fix an issue.  I take this means there will be no fix released for 2011 (as 2014 is due soon and therefore 2011 version falls off the support list)?

This fix is crucial for us now.

Thanks for your feedback here.  We understand the frustration, unfortunately the imminent 2014 software release has played a part in the timing and resources available to us to release a 2011 SP.  We are sensitive to the fact that some users are unable to easily migrate and will keep you updated on our plans moving forward regarding this.

There have been no changes to the service pack.

The published date may have changed as a result of localized readmes getting added to the posting.

Is the purge function safe to use in Vault 2014? We have upgraded Vault 2013 and we have not bothered purging before 2014. Can we just go ahead and do this now. Do we still need to run the ref repair procedure? ...I am asking because that might take us weeks to complete!

If you never ran the "broken purge", then there would be no problematic relationships so it should be safe to use the fixed purge (2012 SP2, 2013 SP1, or 2014 RTM).

 

The reason we recommend customers use the repair utility before doing any purges (even though it is now fixed), is because you could end up purging some version of a file that was the only candidate for "healing" the relationship of  some parent file.

The following hotfixes were provided to Autodesk Product Support and are in the process of being posted to the download page.

 

  • Vault 2013 - DL21021827
  • Vault 2012 - DL21021813

Description of the Issues

  1. Localized versions of Vault server without a default 'Administrator' account was causing login to fail.
  2. Logging into a Vault server with IIS running on a port other than 80 was causing login to fail.

Known Issues

In some instances, the Reference Repair Utility will fail with the message, "The utility has encountered some errors and it has stopped working. Please see the log file for details." This issue is currently being investigated.

How are hotfixes supposed to be installed on the server?  We tried one when we upgraded to 2014 Pro on our server and the command line stuff you're supposed to type in doesn't work.  Something password invalid or whatever.

 

Our policy going forward: If it's not in a service pack, it doesn't get installed.

Any news on the Hotfix for the civil 3d Vault addon that allows Civil 3d 2014 service pack 2 to be installed? We currently are stuck at hotfix 1 and C3D SP 1 waiting. I have tested SP2 and would like to actually use it in production
