Installing Vault 2014 SQL recommendations

Hello,

We are installing Vault Professional on a brand new VMWare environment. We are installing Vault on a Windows 2012 configuration and are planning to use SQL 2012.

I cannot seem to find any documentation wether or not to keep the SQL server on a seperate machine.

What is the recommended (and supported) configuration? Some documentation states that a single machine for Files, SQL and IIS is recommended: http://download.autodesk.com/us/vault/2014/2014_Advanced_Config_Guide-2014.pdf (page 32) and http://download.autodesk.com/global/inventor/Vault_Best_Practices_Whitepaper.pdf which is an old document and seems to be copied to the new guide...

Best regards,

Christiaan

Also, is http://crackingthevault.typepad.com/crackingthevault/2009/07/what-is-the-best-raid-configuration-to-... still valid for Vault 2014?

HI Christiaan,

For simplicity's sake, the same server for all components is usually easiest and is performant as long as you are not running a number of other business critical applications on the same machine.  Splitting SQL from the file server is supported and can have some performance benefits, often though this configuration decision is driven by corporate IT policy rather than big performance gains.  Your replication strategy (if any) may also play a role in this planning.

Nothing much has changed in RAID recommendations - this guide should reflect current guidelines.   RAID 10 being the better but less economic configuration, RAID 5 with only 3 disks being among the worst.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for your answer. We'll use this server as a dedicated server for Vault. We have no intention of using the SQL server for anything else. The discussion we've had with our IT dept. is that SQL tends to eat a lot of memory and this may affect the IIS and Application services of Vault.

I think we'll go for a single server deployment with a RAID 10 disk set.

Thanks!
