There is no longer an easy way to know. You have to try to check out the
file, and if its locked the software will tell you that you can't.

I wish I were kidding.

Hi,

By default, the item security is applied on item related file.
You can check Item security settings via:
Tools->administration, Items tab, Security...
Here you are able to configure item security for each user.

If you want to check why the file has been locked, you can check the file's security via:
1. Select the file,
2. File menu->Properties...
3. Security tab.

If this file is locked by item, it should be "System or overridden security", and the Access Control List is the same with your item security setting.

Not sure if I fully understand your question, but hope this helps.

Thanks,
-Dicky

I believe he is simply talking about the
"locked" icon we used to have.

Like myself, he's using Vault Manufacturing, not
one of the lower tier versions.  In VM, item security is driven by the
ECO.  User-level security settings are not really useful to
us.  Yet because of the new "functionality", we no longer have something
that *was* truly useful: the immediate visual feedback of the "locked" icon,
telling us whether a file can be checked out or not.

This is really very frustrating.  I understand
that users of the other versions of the software got a new feature that they
might be able to use, but since not much of note was added or fixed or improved
in Vault Manufacturing itself (and for a flagship offering, it could use a *lot*
of improvement), that means that this one major regression will be the main
thing that VM2010 will be remembered for.

Actually, that's not true.  It will also
be remembered for that extraordinary productivity-killer, the still
un-fixed virtual part bug.  A real twofer, this release, eh?

Yes, I've griped about it extensively before.
Yes, I surely will again, until it's fixed.  It was a really dirty trick
Autodesk played on it's Vault Manufacturing users, getting us to actually *pay*
for an upgrade that amounted to a considerable net loss in
productivity.

Cheers,

Walt
