Edge Lengths for Mold Meshes

I was asked about guidelines for choosing edge lengths for mold mesh geenration.

In general, it is hard to mesh a mold block by one global edge length (GEL). The recommnedation is:

  • Edge lengths on internal surface (in contact with parts) = Edge length on cavity surface
  • Edge lengths on external surface = Edge lengths on internal surface * (3 - 5)

For example, if the global edge length on part surface is 2mm, you can mesh mold blocks by the following steps:

1. Define local mesh density on external faces of mold block as 3 to 5 times the GEL, eg 8mm.

2. Mesh the mold block with GEL = 2mm. This GEL will be applied on all faces without local mesh density defined.

It is not good to use very small edge length on mold external surface.
