Define mesh density on CAD faces

We recommend users to define local mesh density on faces, instead of using one global edge elngth on all faces.

Normally, the default global edge elngth is calculated based on model dimension. For large models with many small features, this default value may be too large for small faces.

You can select small faces and define small edge length on them, then use the default global edge length on other faces.

However, it may be hard to find/select small faces.

Alternatively, you can select large faces and define appropriate mesh density on them. Then specify a small value as global edge elngth to be used on other (small) faces.

This is a very helpful topic! thanks.

I have a match percentage about 85% (even using different mesh densities).

The problem, i think, is due of two small surfaces Moldflows doesn't mesh.

I try to import these single surfaces alone in a different study but also in this case Moldflow doesn't "see" them.

Any suggestion please?

Thanks in advance.

If import is not correct, I would suggest to try different formats.

Save your model as a different format, eg *.x_t or *.prt, then import to Moldflow.

Alternatively, you can check your model by Cad Dr.

You do not need to pursue higher match ratio if you model is not thin.

When you see 2 faces are not meshed, does the mesh have holes in those areas?

My model is thin. Average thickness is about 2.5mm

My match percentage are 87 and 85%.

Yes these areas are missing, i have holes.

The problem is not the hole, i can fix it manually. I wanted to learn a way to increase the match%, if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Matteo,

RE: holes

Seems your mesh was generated from Iges model.

Holes will not happen if you use CAD.

RE: match ratio

When match ratio=85%, it is good enough to run Dual Domain analysis.

If you would like to increase match ratio by manual editing, you can check mesh match by Mesh->Mesh Diagnostics->Mesh Match.

Unmatched triangles will be displayed as red.

Check red triangles and see if any of them can be merged. If the number of red triangles is reduced, then match ratio will increase a little bit.

Please note:  before merge nodes, click "Ctrl D" to turn off diagnostics, otherwise, it can be very slow.

After editing a region, click "Ctrl D" again to turn on diagnostics.

Match ratio can be reported only by Mesh Statistics.

Personally, I do not recommend users to spend time to edit surface meshes in order to increase match ratio a little bit. It may not be worth to do.

Alternatively, you can try to re-generate the mesh by smaller edge length, eg half. This is what I normally recommend users to do:  To optimize input parameters is better than manual editing.
