In Release 13, ACADMAXMEM enabled you to control whether AutoCAD stored certain data structures in memory or on disk. If you set a low ACADMAXMEM threshold, the graphics refresh file remained mostly on disk. This separate temp file acted as an AutoCAD addition to the system's virtual memory. AutoCAD paged in data from this temp file as needed, just as the operating system pages in virtual memory data from disk into physical RAM.
ACADMAXMEM has been removed in Release 14 because our testing indicated that the operating system could page from virtual memory just as efficiently as AutoCAD paged from the temp file. Furthermore, with the new graphics pipeline, the refresh file no longer exists. Now, the display list, that roughly corresponds to the old refresh file is always in virtual memory.
If you used AutoCAD Release 13 with a low ACADMAXMEM setting, you might need to increase virtual memory settings with Release 14. Virtual memory requirements have increased by an amount roughly equal to the size of the temp file Release 13 created.
