If you change emoticon type to 'none" under My Settings-->Preferences,-->Display, the smileys won't display.

Yes, I know, but that's a global setting. It doesn't make sense to ever parse code for smileys or anything else, regardless of that setting. But that's a tiny nitpick among the terrible mess of this new forum software as a whole, so it's not worth worrying about.

I agree that Smileys should be exempted from code irrespective of global settings ...

I DO know the code in my sig' is incorrect, but I can't use the correct characters in the signature box ![]()
