Conformal Cooling?

There have been a lot of technological advances for conformal cooling. It is now less expensive and can cut cycle times significantly! Many companies are starting to use conformal cooling lines rather than traditional cooling lines in their molds. I was wondering if there was a way to setup conformal cooling lines in Autodesk Moldflow Insight?

This reply applies only to Fusion models:
If the conformal cooling are channels of relatively simple geometries then it is quite possible. Simply recreate your cooling lines as usual. If, on the other hand, you have complex channels constantly changing in cross section and or flooded regions then it is very limited what you can do in Moldflow.

Hi,
Conformal cooling is clearly becoming a viable technology. Conformal cooling can be a great technology to reduce cycle time (production cost) and improve product quality.
Regarding the ability to run conformal cooling analysis in Autodesk Moldflow Insight depends to some extent on the type of conformal cooling that is applied and the objective of the analysis. The following link provides an example of the two types:

1) If the cooling channel can reasonably be described with beam elements (the first number of images in the link), than the current cooling can provide a solutio. I don't think this is limited to Dual Domain (Fusion) technology, but also applies to Midplane and 3D.
2) If the cooling channel is highly networked (the last three images) than this is more difficult to model in Moldflow at the moment. Having said that, the most common reasons for wanting to simulate this type of geometry it to ensure proper coolant flow through the circuits to avoid dead zones (edies) to ensure proper and uniform cooling. To study and optimise this, you could look at the various CFD codes that can help with this.

It is easy to create cooling channels as it is in design but doubt about L/D ratio

with AMPI 2014, it is possible.

 

directly use 3 d model of conforml cooling and use it, but need separate licence from Auto desk..
